Winter Series Alliance

I was back on the golf course last Wednesday at Craigielaw for the Winter Series Alliance. It was a cold windy morning and the golf wasn’t pretty but I manage a round of 73, 2 over par to tie second place. I was only 6 shots of the lead after a very good score of 66 from a fellow pro. My next trip is to Longniddry on Thursday where I’ve never played so I’m looking forward to getting a game.

Still managing to hang onto 5th place in the scratch order of merit.

Junior Lessons - Get Into Golf

During the Easter school holidays, I will be arranging FREE group sessions for juniors. This offer will be available to our members who have a child or grandchild and would like to introduce them to golf. Please contact me with the name and age of the child and I can arrange the groups.

Please remember we offer FREE memberships to children under the age of 14!

Winter League *CORRECTION*

The final of the winter league will be played on Sunday 22nd March, not the 29th March as last week’s newsletter mentioned. Sorry folks, my mistake.

The weather has been a lot better this week and the forecast going forward looks promising, so fingers crossed we get other winter league weekend.

Club news

Wettest On Record

Met Office confirmed this week that February 2020 is the wettest February on record. The golf course has been closed for a part of the month but we are hopeful that good weather is on the way.

We managed to get a picture of the ditch that runs alongside the railway on the 3rd hole. All drains are clear and running well so the golf course should dry out soon.

Head greenkeeper

Unfortunately at the beginning of the week, we received notice from Stuart Speirs that he has accepted a position of Head greenkeeper at Greenburn GC.

We would like to thank Stuart for his hard work during his short time at Shotts and wish him all the best in the future.

We are now in the process of advertising to fill the role. We will keep the membership updated with any progress.

The art of putting

‘Drive for show, putt for dough’. No doubt you have heard this one a few times before but considering putting equates to between 30 to 50% of our shots on the course, it also has a large element of truth in it.

TaylorMade Truss putters

If you're serious about improving your putting this year then it's worth giving Truss a try.

The whole puzzle

If you're considering buying new irons this year, have a think about how they are going to blend into the rest of your set. The idea is to have equal yardage gaps between each club in your bag so, if you are going to treat yourself, it might be worth replacing a long iron with a hybrid that is easier to hit.

Take danger out of play

The illustration here is a good example of where a hybrid comes in handy. When our driver brings danger into play and a long-iron leaves us too far to the green, a hybrid is the perfect option.
