When a player walks into our shop and takes in all the balls on our shelves, we know all too well the look of wonder and awe that can fall on someone’s face. There are many kinds of golf balls to choose from, so how do you know which one to settle on?

Some golfers very much have their favourite ball and stick to the same model while other players prefer a bit of variety in their game. Everyone is different, so what exactly are the benefits and drawbacks of sticking with one ball over playing with different kinds? Let’s look at the data…

Over 50% of golfers play with multiple balls while only 1/3 of players dedicate themselves to the same ball.

When conducting a broad questionnaire across handicaps, mygolfspy.com found that a third of players stick with the same ball while the majority of players like to switch up their preferred ball each season. Some over the course of a single round.

When you’re out on the course and come across a stray golf ball, it can be tempting to want to tee it up on the next hole to see how you get on with it. But what are the benefits of keeping the same ball over switching it up?

Do you stick with the same ball or mix and match?

If you’re regularly playing with the same model golf ball, your shots are going to feel predictable, giving you more confidence each time you step up to the ball. You’ll particularly benefit from getting to know the feel of the ball in your short game, helping you mentally anticipate how much power will need to go into each chip and putt.

Naturally the best performance balls on the market are going to be more costly than lining your bag with cheaper alternatives, but if you’ve got the skill to shape your shots how you please, the price is definitely worth it. So to answer our question, yes, it’s definitely worth finding and sticking with a ball that helps you get the most out of your game, whether you’re seeking spin or forgiveness.

You can argue that regularly experimenting with different kinds of golf balls can give you a broader appreciation for how different balls feel. The contrast between a firm and a soft ball, between urethane and surlyn coatings.

Through being experimental, you’ll find which kind of ball feels best to you. It’s cost-effective, and you’ll feel less pressure to play perfectly for fear of losing your current ball.

Changing balls all the time however will deprive your game of any consistency, which will make it harder to track your progress as you get better at the game. Simply put, picking up and using balls on the course isn’t the best strategy if you want to get serious about your golf.

Our verdict: Know which ball is right for your game and stick with it to get the best results.

You may not even be aware, but Wilson makes a whole range of balls that cater to players of all abilities. To clear any confusion, we’re going to now cover the exact Wilson balls you can find right now in our shop.
